Sport is an important part of our curriculum and learning at Fernhurst Primary School.
All our year groups receive regular PE lessons throughout the week and these are taught both by the class teachers, our school PE Leader; Mr Hussey, and by an external coach Stacey Allen. We are lucky enough to have excellent facilities on site including a running track, football pitch, hard netball court and another hard court for other sports such as basketball and hockey.
Throughout the academic year, we teach a wide range of sports to differing age groups and abilities, these include but are not limited to:
- Tag Rugby
During the Autumn Term in Years 3&4, the children get to take part in off site swimming lessons at our local leisure centre, The Herons. ‘Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we do not have any current data relating to the number of pupils who can swim 25m+. Historical assessments show that the swimming programme supports our pupils to swim to at least the expected standard
During the Spring Term in Year 6, children take part in Bikeability, a cycling road safety awareness course run by qualified instructors from West Sussex County Council .
Year 4 enjoy a residential in the Autumn Term for one night where they take part in adventurous activities including climbing, zip wire, archery and low ropes. Year 6 also get a taster of more unusual, water based sports whilst on their week long residential in the summer. These include:
- Raft building and racing
In addition to our in-class learning, we also offer many sport-based, extra-curricular clubs. These vary each term but in the past have included:
- Multi sports
As a Rother Valley school we also take part in competitive sporting fixtures within the Rother Valley League and to date we have been very successful, winning Football Tournaments and Netball Leagues.
During the Covid 19 Pandemic, we have been continuing to encourage the importance of PE at home. Check out our Virtual Sports Page to find out more!
